Performance Simulation for the General Packet Radio Service, GPRS

Within the next year the first GPRS wireless packet data networks will be operable in Europe. In this paper, we study the capacity of the GPRS air interface under various conditions. For the analysis of the underlying Radio Link Control (RLC) protocol and the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer a simulative approach using OPNET is applied. Performance results for the RLC/MAC protocol are given for different radio conditions and different traffic models. Capacity figures in terms of throughput for different model assumptions are compared. Also, we take a closer look at the link optimization by using the four different coding schemes for GPRS.
